Speaker—Mike Peters
Tonight’s guest photographer,
Mike Peters, is a New Jersey based street photographer who shoots mostly in New York, Jersey, and California. Mike was a finalist in Popular Photography & Imaging’s first annual Photographer of
the Year contest in 2005. The following quote is from his
website <mikepeters.com>
“As an observer of the scene, I can only photograph what I see and respond to
on an emotional level. In the moment, I don't have time to judge or think, only
to react to the geometry of the frame and the feelings that compel me to make
the exposure.” Mike also works at Montclair State University as a campus photographer. Tonight’s curtain
raiser will be Club member, world traveler, and corresponding secretary,
Natalie Manzino. Be on time so you don’t miss a thing.

Trip—Lower East Side
This area of Manhattan, is one of the oldest, most historic, and most
rapidly changing areas of the Big Apple. Once characterized by tenements and
pushcarts, the Lower
East Side gained its
flavor more than 200 years ago, as families squeezed into cramped buildings
that filled lower Manhattan. Industrious immigrants became the Lower East Side’s first business owners. Selling their wares
from potato sacks to thousands of local shoppers, successful business owners
soon expanded their inventory and bought pushcarts—and eventually storefronts
to make Orchard Street one of the busiest commercial districts in the world and
the neighborhood a cultural mecca. We’ll meet at 11:00 a.m. at Yonah Schimmel’s Knishery, located at 137 East Houston Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, have a nosh, and
then start exploring. Leader: Susan Sigrist, 212-758-0036.

Business
Meeting
It’s been a while since our last
business meeting way back in November of last year. The big business for
tonight will be the Constitutional amendments which are up for approval. We’ll
cap it all off with refreshments and a bit of socializing. Remember, according
to our Constitution, you must attend at least 2 business meetings a year to
retain a positive membership status. How many have you attended so far this
year?

to be exciting. Will you be there to share the experience? Full rules are

p.m. PDIs must be submitted a week prior to the competition. Tonight’s judge is
slated to be Kay Kenny. Kay has shown her work and judged at PWCC several times
in the past. She is an adjunct teacher of photography at both NYU and ICP. She

in beautiful downtown Jersey City. Kay has been awarded fellowships from
NJSCA on 3 separate occasions. Please join us for tonight’s competitions.

Trip—Orchid Show
Orchidaceae, also called the
orchid family, is the largest family of flowering plants and contains some of
the most beautiful, ornate, and intricate flowers of all the plant kingdom. And
there’s no better place to see a wide selection of these little gems than at
the annual orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden (in the Bronx). We will
meet at 10:00 a.m. (so we can make the 10:25 a.m. train) at the Metro-North
Info Booth in Grand Central Station. Tickets are $4.75 each way ($3.00 for
seniors) if bought before boarding the train. Bring your close-up/ macro
equipment but no tripods. Admission to the grounds is free on Saturdays before
noon, however there is a $20.00 fee for the orchid show in the Haupt
Conservatory. Be sure to dress appropriately for the occasion and the weather
(it may be cold outside but it will be warm/hot indoors—dress in layers).
Please sign up, don’t be late, call the leader if you can’t make it after all.

Theme
Night—At the Water’s Edge
This is your chance to show us
your interpretation of tonight’s theme—At the Water’s Edge. Your images should
relate to this theme, in some way. (How difficult could that be, living on an
island? Except for our Bronx members, perhaps; but there’s no lack of rivers,
bays, and oceans there, either.) Slides, digital projections, or prints are
fine. Competition rules are not in effect. Please limit your presentation to no
more than 5 minutes.

Tonight’s guest photographer,

Going, Gone elsewhere in this issue of the Newsletter for all the details.
