Show & Tell—Summer Photos

This is the first meeting of the new Club season. It is also your chance to show us what you did over the summer—Club activities, shots around the City, your personal vacation, whatever. Slides, PDIs, or prints are fine. Competition rules are not in effect (you don’t have to make the prints, etc.). Please limit your presentation to no more than five (5) minutes per person. We meet at the Soho Photo Gallery, as usual, at our normal time—7:00 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to share and catch up with the rest of us at PWCC.

Guest Speaker—Rebecca Lepkoff

To start off this season’s guest photographer series, we will see the works of photographer Rebecca Lepkoff. She has been photographing New York City since the late 1930’s. Associated with the Photo League, she captured the ethnic richness of life on the Lower East Side and preserved that culture on vintage silver prints. Some of these rare historical prints are still available, and sell for thousands of dollars today. Rebecca continued to shoot the Lower East Side throughout the fifties, the seventies, and the eighties. She still creates beautiful photographs today, as well as ceramic art and wonderful quilts. Her time is divided between her SOHO loft and country home in Vermont. This is a presentation you won’t want to miss.

Monthly Competition

Tonight is the first competition of the New Year. Who will win the top honors? What will the judge say about your images? Will you agree? The only way to find out the answers to these probing questions is to come on down and enter. Full rules are available from the Competition or the Membership Committees at any meeting. Remember, entries must be submitted by 7:15 p.m. so that we may get under way with the competition promptly at 7:30 p.m. Tonight’s judge is slated to be Bill Perlmutter, a fine art black and white photographer. Bills work, spanning over 50 years of traveling the world, can be found in collections as prestigious as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Museum of the City of New York, among many others. Check out his website at <www.billperlmutterphotography.com>  Bill was a judge at our year-end competition last year.

Guest Speaker—Jason Eskenazi

Tonight’s guest photographer, Jason Eskenazi, is the project director for Kids with Cameras, a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to marginalized children in communities around the world. Jason is also a grant- and fellowship-winning photographer. Check out the Kids with Cameras website at <kids-with-cameras.org> and Jason’s web page at <groupm35.com/eskenazi> Tonight’s curtain raiser will be longtime member and world traveler, Lois Robinson. Be sure to be on time for the festivities so you don’t miss a thing.

Club’s Night Out

For this evening, we will not be meeting at the Soho Photo Gallery; we’ll be somewhere else of photographic interest. It could be at a photographer’s studio, at a photo stock company, at another gallery, who knows? The details will be finalized shortly and published in the next issue of the PWCC Newsletter.

Mini Business Meeting/Mini Workshop

Tonight we will be trying something new (at least we haven’t done it for over 15 years). The regular business meeting will be shortened to less than an hour. We will only deal with items of some urgency. The rest of the evening will be devoted to a short workshop. This could be a technique, a piece of equipment, whatever. As usual, we will end the evening with socialization and refreshments. Remember, the PWCC Constitution requires that all Club members attend at least two business meetings each year. Why not make this one of them.
